How
to stop Rose soil sickness in your
garden
Planting
roses in the garden, particularly
into soil in which the same species
was previously growing, they will
be rose sick. Previous roses will
leave secretions in the soil that
are not enjoyed by the new ones; In
fact they will find them offensive.
Resulting in a condition called “Specific
Replant Disease”.
A
work around for planting in the same
spot is to remove the soil and replace
it with soil from another part of
the garden. Remove twice the amount
of depth needed for planting and refill
with the new soil.
The
good news is rose soil sickness does
not have any adverse effect on other
garden plants. If replacing the soil
is not possible, it must be rested
for at least two years. A rose suffering
from rose sickness will not recover
unless it is dug up and moved into
fresh ground.
Commercial rose growers will rotate
their crops in order to avoid this
problem leaving their land rose free
for at least two years before re-planting
with roses.
