The
Major nutrients needed for plant growth
and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
A plant removes these nutrients from
the soil and uses them as it grows,
so fertilizer is used to replace them,
allowing continued growth. Nutrient
needs are greatest during periods
of rapid growth typically sprint &
summer.
Generally
commercial fertilizers list their
content as the percentage of each
nutrient in the order nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium,
so a 20-10-10 fertilizer would be
20 percent nitrogen, 10 percent of
each phosphorus and potassium.
Nitrogen
is the most consumed nutrient, used
heavily in the green vegetative growth.
A yellowing of leaves, particularly
older leaves, often indicates a deficiency
of nitrogen and that it is time to
add fertilizer. Phosphorus and potassium
are necessary for a wide range of
plant functions especially during
periods of rapid growth.
Fertilizers
come in many different forms both
dry & liquid. We recommend using
organic fertilizers, which are increasingly
available, and we find for most herbs,
especially container planted herbs,
that an all-purpose or fish emulsion
liquid fertilizer adequately supplies
nutrient needs.
